How to play

Twixt is a two-player strategy game on a grid of holes and pegs.

  • Red connects the top and bottom edges
  • Blue connects the left and right edges
  • Take turns placing pegs on empty holes
  • Link pegs a knight’s move apart (like chess)
  • Links cannot cross each other
Strategy tips
  • Control the center of the board early
  • Block your opponent’s potential connections
  • Create multiple possible paths to your goal
  • Watch for opportunities to bridge around blocked areas

About Twixt

Twixt was invented by Alex Randolph in 1962 and published by 3M as part of their bookshelf games series. This browser edition brings the tactile feel of the classic board to your screen.

Can links cross each other?

No. Links cannot cross — that rule is what gives Twixt its depth.

Can I use the corner holes?

No. The four corner points are not playable for either player.

Is there a first-player advantage?

Some players feel Red has a slight edge. Advanced groups sometimes use the “pie rule,” letting Blue swap colors after Red’s opening move.
